　1990年2月にリリースされているので1989年の録音と思います。ジョーイにとってはセカンド・アルバムとなるようです。ジョンスコは1曲目の「I'll Always Love You」のみに参加。リズム・ギタリストもいて、出番はソロのみ、なにげに仕事モードですねぇ。アルバム自体もすごく参加ミュージシャンが多く、主役のジョーイにスポットが当たっているとはいいがたし。内容と関係ありませんが、この頃のジョーイさんは二枚目で格好いいのに今はすんごい太っちゃってますね。改めてアルバム全曲を聴くと、ライナーノーツのクレジットには載っていないものの、10曲目の「Love Attack」で開始1分45秒からのギターソロは明らかにジョンスコのもの。合計2曲の参加が確認できました。

　1990年2月にリリースされているので、レコーディングは1989年と思います。ここでのジョンスコのギタープレイからもグラマビジョン時代からブルーノート時代にかけての雰囲気が聴き取れます。ジョンスコは「Why Is It I Can Never Find Anything In The Closet (It's Long But It's Alright)」を除き、ほぼ全面参加でウネウネとジョンスコ節全開の裏名盤的作品！フィーチャリング・ジョン・スコフィールドと言っても過言ではないアルバムです。ジョンスコが参加していない最終曲もドン・プーレンとソニー・シャーロックが過激に攻めていてこれも聴き所のひとつ。すべての曲をステュ・ガードナーと共に書いた主役ビル･コスビーは有名なコメディアン・作家・俳優さんのようで、音楽活動もコンスタントに行っている人のようです。変り種なアルバムですがジョンスコ的には掘り出し物！こういうのがあるので、ジョンスコ追っかけはやめられない！

SCO' BETTER BLUES - JOHN SCOFIELD INTERVIEW (17)

VR: You are documented on record your tour in Europe with George Duke and Billy Cobham. Do you like playing in Europe?

JS: Oh yeah. When I made that record with Cobham and Duke, it was 1976. Since then, I every six months I will go to Europe and play for month. I feel like lived four years in Europe in my lifetime – not consecutively. I do not think there would be modern jazz as we know it without the European audience and the European jazz market. I feel lucky just getting to be in all those cultures.

VR: I know that with progressive rock that Italy has a wealth of fans. Is there any particular European country that has an equivalent fervent fan base for jazz?

JS: It is all Western European countries.

VR: What do you do when you are not playing music?

JS: I spend a lot of time with my family. Music is my main thing, that is for sure. I like people and shooting the shit. I like my life, my house, my family, and spending my time with them. No big hobbies.

　ブラッド・スウェット＆ティアーズのスティーヴ・カッツが社長を務めるグリーン・リネット・レコーズのホームレスのためのベネフィット･アルバムで、アーティストはその主旨に賛同してノー･ギャラで参加しているそう。クリスマス曲は初録音のジョンスコはソロ演奏の「Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas」でアルバムの最後をしっとりと締めくくっています。見慣れないミュージシャンが多いですが、エイドリアン・ブリュー、タジ・マハール、アル・クーパー、ラリー・コリエルなどなかなか渋い面々が集まっていて、面白いクリスマス・アルバムです。

In my suburban town, everyone was into rock. Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton were early influences. I had heard them in concert and also began to become interested in folk music, R&B and the blues. That led me to jazz in high school and lessons with Alan Dean, a guitar teacher and frustrated bebopper who worked at Merritt Music, a local music shop. I took lessons with him starting at age 15. 　ジョンスコはマッコイ･タイナーのソロ中心のアルバムにデュエット曲のゲストとして「I Mean You」、「Here's That Rainy Day」、「Joy Spring」の3曲に参加、1989年11月27日に録音しています。ジョンスコ自身のアルバム製作から1週間しか経っていないので、本作でのプレイもその延長線上にあり、モンクの「I Mean You」ではアーシーなプレイを、「Here's That Rainy Day」ではしっとりとマッコイのピアノに寄り添いながら、「Joy Spring」ではジャズ･ギタリスト然としたプレイをしています。ウネウネなジョンスコ節含有率は少なめ。炸裂するにも相手が大御所ならば気を使うのも当然か。いや、俺が俺がの我をひけらかさなくても、この時期のジョンスコのプレイには存在感があります。デュオ演奏にも安定感が増し安心して聴かせてくれるようになっています。

　ジョンスコのブルー・ノート移籍（契約は1989年夏頃か？）後、初のリーダー･アルバム。1989年11月19日から21日にかけてニューヨークのパワー・ステーションでレコーディングされ、12月9日、10日にミキシングがされています。邦題は『ギタリストの肖像』。前作『Flat Out』でもアプローチされていたアコースティック･ジャズ路線を全面に打ち出した作品。リズム･セクションがベースにチャーリー・ヘイデン、ドラムにジャック・ディジョネットと強力！さっすがブルー・ノート！そしてもう一人重要人物がいます。サキソフォンのジョー・ロヴァーノで彼とは次作以降も双頭バンドとして活動を続けることになります。楽曲はすべてジョンスコのオリジナルで、ニューオリンズ･サウンドやセカンド･ライン、R&B、ブルース、ビ･バップを通過した感じのテーマが並びます。作曲の雰囲気も80年代のテクニカルでメカニカル？な感じではなく、レイジーというかアーシーな感じに変化している。この作風はジョンスコ90年代の特徴です。自由度の高い音楽が繰り広げられ第2期黄金期の到来！ジョンスコはこのレコーディング後2ヶ月間ギターに触れない生活を送り、再びギターと向き合うことになります。
